About Us

Last updated September 4, 2026

StepExamPrep is an independent USMLE Step 1 practice platform built around one idea: the most useful preparation is the kind that most closely resembles the real thing.

What we built

Most question banks give you questions. Fewer give you the experience of sitting a full-length examination — fourteen blocks, twenty questions each, thirty minutes per block, with the fatigue and pacing pressure that come with it. Knowing the material and being able to demonstrate it across seven hours are different skills, and only one of them is usually practised.

StepExamPrep offers ten complete full-length practice exams built to the published Step 1 blueprint, covering all eleven content categories in the same proportions as the real examination. Every exam can be paused and resumed, so a study session that has to stop for a shift or a class does not have to be abandoned.

Original questions, written for this purpose

Every question on the platform is an original work written by our authors. None are retired, leaked, or reproduced from any real examination. They are written as clinical vignettes in the style Step 1 uses, and each one carries an explanation for every answer choice, not only the correct one. Understanding why a plausible distractor fails is usually where the learning happens.

Selected questions include clinical images drawn from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Public Health Image Library, which is in the public domain. Each image is individually verified before use.

Four ways to study

  • Full length exams — fourteen blocks, 280 questions, a simulated three-digit score, and a complete review afterwards.
  • Quiz Me — build a timed quiz of any length from any combination of topics, for the days when a full exam is not what you need.
  • Question Review — untimed, with the answer and reasoning shown the moment you commit to a choice, while your thinking is still fresh.
  • Audio Quiz — your chosen topics assembled into a single audio file that reads each question aloud, pauses for you to think, then gives the answer. Built for commutes, runs, and the hours when your hands are busy but your attention is not.

Progress you can see

The dashboard tracks your score history, your accuracy in each of the eleven content categories, and a study streak that rewards consistency rather than cramming. Because a bad week should not undo a good month, the streak includes one rest day each week, used automatically.

How we handle your work

When we revise a question, exams you have already started or completed continue to show the version that was live when you began. Your results stay consistent and comparable over time, and an update to our content never silently changes a score you have already earned.

What we are not

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the Federation of State Medical Boards, or the USMLE program. USMLE® is a registered trademark of the NBME and FSMB. Our practice scores are estimates based on performance against our own material, not predictions of a real examination result.
